In 1998, a young fledgling MC joins the legendary Kool FMs Super Sunday set with DJ Funky Flirt and MC Shabba. Before long, the hype generated by these shows was enough for promoters to offer bookings and residencies at some of the top Drum and Bass promotion nights becon.. One Nation, Telepathy & Jungle Fever are some of the pioneering events in the Drum and Bass scene! The MC is Riddla and this is his story.
After an explosive introduction to the world of Jungle / Drum and Bass.. Riddla finds himself being booked for all of the top events. His name is printed on flyers for premier events up and down the country.. Best Of British, Heat, Pure science, Desire, Innovation, Helter Skelter to name a few.
In 1999, Riddla is taking his sound Global. Tours in America, Canada, Switzerland, France, Poland, Estonia, Austria & Germany only a year after his debut.
The turn of the Millenium saw a change in Riddla. Following a show in Denver Colorado with Darren Jay and MC Fearless, Riddla took the stage after Rap legend Dougie Fresh. The magnitude of this performance compelled Riddla to start making records and step up his own levels and make new targets for himself. His new aim was to start writing Hip Hop.
Riddla gets to work writing new lyrics while still performing at Drum and Bass events and earning himself kudos from ravers and peers alike. It is a year before he decides that he has perfected his flow enough to record and in 2002, gets to work on a new project.
With Darren Jay having agreed to produce for him, they rent a studio and the collaboration bears fruit. The result is Riddla's first 2 tracks "Love cease' & 'Fully loaded' (named after the crew Riddla and IC3 had set up around the same time). Riddla decides that he is going to start putting together some power moves and sets himself a target of 8 months to put things into place for an album.
2003, comes around and the album is complete, due to come out on Darrens Jays label, Wide Open.
The buzz around Riddlas name in the Drum n Bass scene at the time was at an all time high. The organisers of Telepathy recognised this and approached him with an idea to hold a dance in his honour and this was the catalyst for the event Riddlas Fully loaded X Mas Special.
This was an opportunity that Riddla chose to let the masses know that he was to take some time out. His aim was to do less shows and spend more time in the studio and promoting his impending album which was to surface in early 2004. The night turned out to be a road block.
Early 2004 and Nu urban music agree to press an E.P. of the album consisting of four tracks. A few months later, the vinyl gets pressed and hits the shelves, sales are not as good as hoped though, unfortunately and the album release date is delayed and things seem to come to a halt. Refusing to concede defeat, Riddla starts to record tracks in other studios all through 2005, travelling to Brighton every week, to work with producers The Chemists, whilst still playing his trade in the Drum and Bass scene.
Unknown to him at the time.. The E.P. he had put out the year before, had come to the attention of some important people.
The Diesel Awards were looking at young unsigned musicians for their award show which was to be televised on Channel 4 and had stumbled across Riddla and his E.P. He was nominated and won the U.Ks Best Unsigned Hip Hop Artist and it was this pivot in his career that made Riddlas work ethic even stronger and go on to record over 50 tracks in a year.
2006 arrives and Riddla is constantly working on new material, appearing on a track with living legend Chuck D of Public enemy fame, and releasing an independent mixtape called Cyanezee. His hard work catches the ear of a few industry people and by the following year creates a path to a state of the art studios and some top UK producers who are keen to collaborate. Deciding to focus all his energies, Riddla starts work on another project.. another album.
A year later and the "By any means" album is recorded which consists of around 20 tracks. Most people would have been ready to go but Riddla decides to take a step back and listen to all of his own material adjectively. Much to many of the peoples disbeleif around him. Riddla decides that the album is not commercial enough, declares that he isnt ready for it to go out, puts back the release date and gets back to work. He continues to work through the year and into 2008. After 3 months of working at the beginning of the year, A new album is created entitled "Race Against Time".
Finally he is happy with the end result, and is quoted saying "this is my best piece of work, there is something for everybody on there.
This year has also seen Riddla appear on Kiss fm and support Busta Rhymes pushing his Hip Hop clout even further up the chart. The release date for the first radio single Pull up featuring RaggaTwins is set for September 21st....With the Offical single for the new album being released early 09 , followed up with the album due for release in early Febuary and as if by a bizarre twist of fate the Darren Jay album , Troublesome Waters from 2004 finally emerges in April 2008.
